- Endemic to the southern part of the Western Ghats

- IUCN Status: Critically Endangered 

- Known from at least two protected areas, Anamalai Tiger Reserve of TN ( Earlier known as Indira Gandhi National Park) and Parambikulam Tiger Reserve of Kerala.

- Threatened by habitat loss caused by the conversion of forests to other uses as well as by timber extraction.
