● Released by NITI Aayog + Institute for Competitiveness by using 66 unique indicators
● Developed on the lines of Global Innovation Index (GII), to ameliorate the innovation ecosystem of Indian states & UTs and to design policies to drive innovation across regions
● Aim :- It examines states' innovation capacities and ecosystems at sub-national level, highlights recent factors and catalysts for promoting such crisis-driven innovation.
● Index is divided into 17 major states, 10 northeast & hill states and 9 UTs and city-states
● It discusses 7 key pillars viz. Human capital, Investment, Knowledge workers, Business environment, Safety and legal environment, Knowledge output, Knowledge diffusion
● Karnataka in states, Manipur in NE-Hilly states and Chandigarh in UT's topped the index.
