KHARAI CAMEL

●Name origin: From Gujarati “Khara” (saline) — denotes its adaptation to saline desert–coastal ecosystems. ●Unique feature: Only camel breed...

● The Escape Clause is mentioned under Section 4(2) of the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management(FRBM) Act.

● The Escape Clause allows the Center to breach its fiscal deficit target by 0.5 percentage points in exceptional circumstances.

These exceptional circumstances include:
a) National security
b) war
c) National calamity
d) Collapse of agriculture
e) Structural reforms and
f)Decline in real output growth of a quarter by at least three percentage points below the average of the previous four quarters.
● RE-HAB Project is an innovative way of preventing elephant–human conflicts.

● It is demonstrated by Khadi & Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC).

● Under this project, bee boxes are used as a fence to prevent elephants from entering human habitation.

● Elephants fear that the honeybees might sting them in their eyes & the inner side of the trunk. Also, the buzz of the bees irritates the elephants the most.

● The uniqueness of Project RE-HAB is that it does not cause any harm to both humans and elephants.
● It is launched by Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.

● Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0) with the vision of creating Garbage Free Cities by 2026.

● Towards this end, one of the major objectives under the Mission is to remediate 16 crore metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste dumpsites occupying nearly 15,000 acres of city land.

● Legacy dumpsites pose a major threat to the environment and contributes to air pollution and water pollution.

● Legacy wastes are the wastes that have been collected & kept for years at some barren land or a place dedicated for Landfill

● Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) is the leading global public-private initiative promoting cleaner fuels and vehicles in developing countries and countries in transition.

● The initiative was established at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.

● UNEP hosts the Secretariat.

● The initiative has also launched a campaign to eliminate leaded petrol in 2002.

● The 2021 has marked the end of leaded petrol worldwide.
● First Movers Coalition was launched at the Climate Change Conference COP26 of UNFCCC.

● Aim: To bring together global companies with supply chains across carbon-intensive sectors.

● They range from major consumer goods firms that ship, truck and fly their products, to renewable energy companies that use steel to build wind turbines.

● These companies are leveraging their collective buying power to create the market conditions required to unleash innovation which will reduce the amount of carbon emitted in certain particularly pollutant industries.
● It is a radio telescope designed to answer major questions in astrophysics and cosmology.

● The telescope is a partnership between the University of British Columbia, McGill University, the University of Toronto and the Canadian National Research Council’s Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory.

● Working of CHIME Telescope:
- The CHIME telescope functions a bit differently from others used for radio astronomy. Most radio astronomy is done by rotating a large dish to focus light from different parts of the sky.

- On the other hand, the CHIME telescope comprises four massive parabolic radio antennas. It has no moving parts, and it receives radio signals each day from half of the sky as the Earth rotates.

- CHIME has a powerful digital signalling processor that works at about seven terabits per second – equivalent to a few percent of the world’s internet traffic.

- This digital signal processor reconstructs and looks in thousands of directions simultaneously.

● Location: The telescope is located at Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia, Canada.
● It is an unmanned remotely operated tank.

●Developed by DRDO.

● It has been launched in three variants:
Muntra-S : For surveillance
Muntra-M : For mine detection
Muntra-N : For reconnaissance in areas with nuclear and biological threats.

● It is also likely to be used in Naxal-hit areas.

● The Muntra variants have surveillance radar, an integrated camera along with laser range finder which can be used to spy on ground target 15km away – heavy vehicles or crawling men.
● This ‘warm’ vaccine is being developed by Raghavan Varadarajan, Professor at the Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore in association with Mynvax, a start-up that was incubated at IISc and was co-founded by him.

● It is a unique vaccine that can be stored at 37 degrees Celsius for a period of four weeks and for up to 90 minutes at 100 degrees Celsius.

● Vaccine contains a part of the coronavirus’s spike protein known as the receptor-binding domain (RBD) that helps the virus to stick to the host’s cell.

๐Ÿ“” As the name suggests, a mutual fund is a fund that is created when a large number of investors put in their money, and is managed by professionally qualifed persons with experience in investing in diferent asset classes—shares, bonds, money market instruments like call money, and other assets such as gold and property.

Their names usually give a good idea about what type of asset class a fund,
also called a scheme, will invest in.

For example, a diversifed equity fund will invest in a large number of stocks, while a gilt fund will invest in government securities, while a pharma fund will mainly invest in stocks of companies from the pharmaceutical and related industries.

● Biodiversity prospecting or bioprospecting is the systematic search for biochemical and genetic information in nature in order to develop commercially valuable products for pharmaceutical, agricultural, cosmetic and other applications.

● It will help in promotes Innovation- medicinal properties of the plants are researched and utilised- Even our indigenous medical system is heavily based on bioprospecting.

● Convention on Biological Diversity, 1992 has measures to protect local communities from ensuring benefits derived are not abused by enterprises.

● Traditional knowledge is at the risk of biopiracy and intellectual property, especially for the countries who are not parties to Nagoya Protocol- which stems from CBD,1992 .
● The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC), an apex body under MoEF tasked with adjudicating requests to raze forest land for commercial ends, has approved the Green Credit Scheme that could allow “forests” to be traded as a commodity.

● FAC has recommended that private players be allowed to raise plantations to be later used towards CA.

● If implemented, it allows the Forest Department to outsource its responsibilities of reforesting to non government participating agencies — private companies, village forest communities, etc.

● After three years, they would be eligible to be considered as compensatory forest land if they met the Forest De partment’s criteria.

● The participating agency will be free to trade its asset, that is plantation, in parcels, with project proponents who need forest land and the forest land would then be transferred to the Forest Department and be recorded as forest land.
● In 2018, the Quito Adjustment is the adjustment made to the Montreal Protocol.

● It aims to avoid 1ยบC of future warming.

● In this, the decision to strengthen enforcement mechanisms of this accord in response to an unexpected rise in global emissions of the banned chemical trichlorofluoromethane or CFC-11 was adopted.

● Practical arrangements were made to implement the Kigali Amendment by approving technologies for destruction of substances controlled under the Protocol & adopting new data reporting requirements.

● News-Recently, first-of-its-kind World Health Organization (WHO) Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) inaugurated in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Purpose for establishing GCTM

● Aims to channel the potential of traditional medicine, by integrating it with technological advancements and evidence-based research.

● Set policies and standards on traditional medicine products and help countries create a comprehensive, safe, and high-quality health system.

● Support efforts to implement the WHO’s Traditional Medicine Strategy (2014-23)
● In February 2022, FSSAI decided to adopt the Health-Star Rating(HSR) system for food products

● Its aim is to guide consumers to opt for healthy food

● Under this system, packaged foods will display the number of stars on the front of the pack, indicating how healthy or unhealthy it is depending upon the amount of salt, sugar and fat it has

● It gives a product 1 star to 5 stars, in for front of package labelling (FOPL).

● Exclusion - Milk and dairy products will be excluded from this proposed front-of-the-pack labelling.

● This rating system will be initially voluntary from 2023 with a transition period of four years. After this, it would be made mandatory.

● At present, countries such as the UK, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand, and Australia have FoPL
● It can be produced from underground coal reserves through the process of coal gasification. It is a mixture of hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

● It can also be produced from sewage, saw-dust, scrap wood, newspapers and other biomass wastes.

● Syngas can be used as a feedstock for the production of methanol, fertilisers, ammonia, urea etc.

● The syngas obtained from coal gasification can be used in a variety of applications such as in the production of electricity and making chemical products such as fertilisers.

● It is defined as a state whereby the amount and quality of land resources, necessary to support ecosystem functions and services and enhance food security, remains stable or increases within specified temporal and spatial scales and ecosystems.

● Target 15.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDG) aims to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) worldwide by 2030.

● The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) adopted LDN as the principal target of the Convention at COP12 in October 2015.

● Any metallic chemical element that has a relatively high density (> 5 g/cm 3) and is toxic or poisonous at low concentrations.

● Examples of heavy metals include mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), thallium (Tl), and lead (Pb)

● Source of Heavy Metals:

Natural Sources:
» Geographical phenomena like volcanic eruptions, weathering of rocks, leaching into rivers, lakes and oceans due to action of water.

Anthropogenic Sources:
» Released into the water through anthropogenic activities such as mining, manufacturing, electroplating, electronics, discharge from auto exhaust, domestic waste, agricultural waste and fertilizer production.
● National Gene Bank was established in 1996.

● It aims to preserve the seeds of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) for future generations in the form of seeds, genomic resources, pollen etc.

● It is hosted by National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi.

● It can store different crop groups such as cereals, millets, medicinal and aromatic plants and narcotics, etc.

● The NGB has four kinds of facilities, namely, Seed Gene bank (- 18°C), Cryogene bank (-170°C to -196°C), In vitro Gene bank (25°C), and Field Gene bank, to cater to long-term as well as medium-term conservation

5Gi

●5Gi is a locally designed telecommunication network that has been designed by IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras and the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology

 ● The project is approved by the Department of Telecommunications in India and has been provided with funding as well.

● The technology developed by Indian institutions will be an alternative to the global 5G standards and

● It has already got approval from the International Communication Unit.

 ● 5Gi provides a higher range at a lower frequency as compared to Standard 5G service.
● Edge computing means taking real-time decisions close to the source of data.

● By locating computational intelligence close to the individual and different sources of the data, edge computing reduces latency in the implementation of a requested service.

● It is predicted that edge computing would be the next big trend after cloud. The global edge computing market is forecasted to reach more than $ 8 Billion by 2025 valued growing at more than 32% between 2019-2025
