● About Dugong

- Dugong or sea cow is the only herbivorous mammal that is strictly marine 
- Live in groups and come to the surface to breathe, and have mammary glands.
- Long-living animals that have a low reproductive rate, long generation
time, 
- Elephants are considered to be their closest relatives. 

 ● Distribution- in tropical and sub-tropical coastal and island water between about 26° north and south of the Equator

- In India they are seen in Gulf of Mannar, Gulf of Kutch, Palk Bay, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- Dugong is state animal of Andaman and Nicobar

 ● Conservation status: 
    IUCN- Vulnerable 
    WPA- Schedule I
    CITES-Appendix I
