At 42 km from the city of Yogyakarta, among the rice fields and jungles of Java, on the slopes of an earthen hill rises a giant Buddhist temple - Borobudur.

Its terraces, steps and niches, forming spiral rows, make up a majestic pyramid 34 meters high, topped with a bell-shaped stupa. The Borobudur temple represents the model of the universe in Buddhist terms. The eight tiers of the temple represent the eight steps to enlightenment.
